Gay Olympian headlines City Club talk
by Susan Christopher
Cleveland-The Cleveland Foundation, in partnership with the 2014 Gay Games and The City Club of Cleveland, today announced that Greg Louganis, the first man to win two gold medals in diving in two consecutive Olympiads, will participate in the opening weekend of Gay Games 9 presented by the Cleveland Foundation.
On Saturday, August 9, Louganis will headline "The Power of Embracing Difference," a Cleveland Foundation-City Club special event to kick off the first weekend of the 2014 Gay Games. Louganis will join Cleveland Foundation President and CEO Ronn Richard in a conversation on the power of em-
bracing difference and diversity, and the impact of the Gay Games on participants and the Greater Cleveland community. Later in the day, Louganis will be part of the full-scale production at the Opening Ceremony at Quicken Loans Arena.
"Greg Louganis has a tremendous story, one that he shares with a warmth and grace that embody the spirit of the Gay Games," Richard said. "We are proud to welcome Greg and the world to Cleveland and Akron, and look forward to starting an important conversation on how our community can continue to build on the legacy of the Games for years and generations to come."
Louganis' visit is a double anniversary for the diver who broke records. and won hearts at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics. Thirty years ago, he trained as a member of the U.S. Olympic dive team at Busbey Natatorium at Cleveland State University. Twenty years ago, the gold medalist broke ground when he came out publicly at Gay Games IV in New York.
An author, Louganis published his best-selling memoir Breaking the Surface, detailing his struggles against domestic abuse and HIV. It was only after coming out as an HIV-positive gay man that he was able to find peace and help others fighting personal battles.
Doors to the City Club event will open at noon August 9, with the program running from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. For more information and tickets, please visit www.cityclub.org. The City Club of Cleveland is on the second floor of 850 Euclid Avenue in downtown Cleveland.
The Gay Games Opening Ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. For information on tickets or other Gay Games events, visit www.2014GayGames.com.

Cleveland-Sistah Sinema builds community and conversation using films that are created by, or depict the complex lives of queer women of color. On Friday, August 22, Sistah Sinema will feature Reaching for the Moon, a film exploring the passionate and creative relationship between American poet Elizabeth Bishop and Brazilian architect Lota de Macedo Soares. Audre Lorde, black, lesbian, feminist, poet, said of the erotic: "I find the erotic such a kernel within myself. When released from its intense and constrained pellet, it flows through and colors my life with a kind of energy that heightens and sensitizes and

MOCA's second partnership with Sistah Sinema will unite two first-time community partners: Queerland 216, a monthly open mike that focuses on dismantling discrimination, violence and oppression against and within the LGBTQ community, and She Speaks, an organization that empowers women and strengthens communities through the written word.
This event coincides with MOCA's exhibit, Someday is Now: The Art of Corita Kent which marks the first fullscale survey of more than thirty years of work by the artist, who lived from 1918 to 1986. A teacher at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles and a civil rights, feminist, and anti-war activist, Kent was one of the most popular American graphic artists of the 1960s and 1970s. Kent's earnest, collaborative approach to art-making-combining faith, politics and teaching with messages of acceptance and hopecontinues to be a potent influence for many artists working today.
"MOCA is happy to partner with Sistah Sinema for the second time, as both organizations value connecting diverse audiences to compelling artists of all backgrounds. The partnership is especially impactful in light of the summer exhibition, with both Sistah Sinema and MOCA bringing attention and recognition to outstanding female
artists," says Sarah Rehm, communications manager of MOCA.
MOCA Cleveland is located in University Circle, 11400 Euclid Avenue. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Advance tickets can be purchased through MOCA by calling 216421-8671 or visiting www.moca cleveland.org.
